Maine’s Mobile Connectivity Environment

Reliable mobile service is essential to daily life in Maine, enabling constant connectivity for communication, work, and access to information. From staying in touch with family and colleagues to navigating directions or managing finances, reliable mobile coverage supports countless tasks that Mainers depend on every day. Strategic state and regional plans for Maine’s economic development, education, public safety, and broadband development consistently highlight mobile service as foundational infrastructure for businesses, workers, and customers. Despite its critical importance, mobile coverage across Maine remains uneven. To better understand where coverage is insufficient and to determine the factors contributing to those conditions, the Maine Connectivity Authority, with support from the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development and the Northern Border Regional Commission, commissioned this study to assess mobile carriers’ network performance, public satisfaction with existing service, the demand for improved service, and the obstacles that carriers encounter when expanding coverage throughout the state.
