Maine receives $5 million federal grant to help expand broadband access

The federal government is giving Maine a planning grant of more than $5 million to help communities plan how they want to expand broadband access.

PORTLAND (WGME) -- A plan to expand broadband access to every community in Maine got a much-needed boost Thursday from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration.

The federal government is giving Maine a planning grant of more than $5 million to help communities plan how they want to expand broadband access.

President Joe Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure law includes a $65 billion investment to expand high-speed internet access in communities across the U.S.

"It's a really big state,” Andrew Butcher of Maine Connectivity Authority said. “We have a lot of space and not a lot of humans, and a significant amount of work. The key to success for us will be to layer a number of different technology solutions and models, so that we can ensure a basic level of connectivity as soon as possible."
